Lost root access after DA install

the pulldown list, so I choose "/usr/local/directadmin/data/templates/edit_files.txt" and hit "Show File".

Ah ha. That's the point I was missing. I thought you were editing edit_files.txt from a ssh shell. I thought you were editing the file from a ssh shell so that you could then add sshd_config and then use DA to edit sshd_config which didn't make any sense to me because if you can edit edit_files.txt from the shell you can edit sshd_config from the shell.

I didn't know you could edit edit_files.txt from within DA. I rarely ever use it. Looking at your first post I can see it now. I hope you can see why I was confused. I need to be taught like a 4 year old.

I think it would be a good idea for you to write a HOWTO for this so that other FreeBSD users that make this mistake can overcome it without being physically at the machine. I personally like a numbered step by step HOWTO.

I didn't know it either untill that friend showed me (and he figured it out himself). Since then I do use it more often, it's easier to use for quick things than vi... :)

Maybe I will someday :)

Seems scarey that this is even possible. If someone got an admin account on your da they could potentially do anything they wanted to your box with this method.

They still have to have the root password to do it. So if they have the admin password and the root password they don't need DA to edit any files.

If ssh is blocked in the firewall then DA would be useful for disabling the firewall to allow an attacker to get command line access. But again he would have to already know both passwords.

And I got completely lost. I didn't even think about the File Editor. I just kept clicking on the Files icon and wondered why I couldn't edit the files or even find the path :).
