restore system backup

Please respect youre customers.
We´re allready wait too long for it...
the restore of the backup files must be easier.

I wouldn't even mind a link to some page you guys could put up explaining step by step how to restore a system backup. Even if you don't put in an automatic setup I would have no issues if someone spent 10 minutes writing something up that would explain how you would restore a user from a system backup to a brand new installation of DA.

fact of the matter, cpanel the biggest DA competition does this without issues unless the users backup file is like 20gb.

but besides that it backs up/restores with 1 click and without issue from one OS to another.

I have been asking DA to do this for years as well, however it has never been put on priority. It should be the #1 priority for a leading control panel to have a proper system backup/restore.

Sure I can restore it myself, but as many said that takes up to 24 hours.

It looks as if there's an interest in a backup restore tool.

We'll be hiring a programmer within the month and at that time we should have enough staff to start working on our customized system-backup/restore tool.

While I would most likely purchase and use your tool because you do quality work Jeff, this is really something I am disapointed in DA with. This should be included in our license cost not be an additional cost to have proper backup restore functions...every other leading panel has it.

The admin backup is designed to be restored by knowledgeable systems administrators. We've done it several times and it works for us.<snap>

A little knowledge can't do any harm ;)

But, it is not just about knowing how to do it, it is also about spending the time to do a full restore. That means, both on the customerside as on the sysadmin side.

If an employee could just continue his work and look at the screen occasionally, to ensure the progress on the restore, that would save a bundle of time (=costs).

And, speaking of costs, I have to conclude that there has been made a comparison to a control panel, thats costs a lot more than DA. You could conclude to a connection between the purchase costs and the amount of features.

But, it would be a big timesaver to have a working 'automatic' full restore system. Although never had the use for it (yet  ), I would purchase it as an investment to save time later on, assuming the costs of that addon would be 'reasonable'.

I just had this discussion today with one of our large rental-server clients.

The biggest problem I can see is that DA isn't an appliance; everyone can install all their own stuff.

It's backing up and restoring that stuff, and especially between systems with differing stuff, that causes the difficulty.

If we create this it's going to work with DA (specific version we're using at the time), and with CentOS (also specific version we're using at the time).

Because after all, we'd be writing it for us.

And once it's written we may decide to sell it, but certainly with no warranty as there are just too many variables.

If DA only worked on one OS with only one set of programs, and if DA controlled the time of the updates and the status of each update, as most CPs do, it would be easy.

For example, Plesk's backup system is totally automated but it only works on specific platforms with no changes, on specific versions of Plesk.

Is that what you want? If so we can do it for our current installation, but only for our current installation.

Jeff

yes please..

If there is a backup function, there should also be an restore function.

If you can't restore, why should you backup

Because you can restore manually when needed. The only feature DirectAdmin backups were missing was an option to restore DNS data, which got added in 1.27.0.

You don't want everything to be automated anyway. You want good documentation to restore. Saves you time and keeps you in control.

In my opinion that's the same. A restore button, or a well documented restore. I even prefer the documented option. But that one doesn't exist either.

The best documentation is the one you wrote yourself.

Of course only you can read it :) which is the reason we don't publish the stuff we created as we made our initial mistakes.

Would be nice a full admin backup the same way that the reseller level has.

But now with sysbk we have all the files to restore all the system althougt was manually
