I've just purchased an SSL certificate that I tried installing and it didn't work.

I went to
User Level > SSL Certificates
- From here, I entered the information and generated a CSR.

I uploaded it and purchased the SSL cert.

I went back to
User Level > SSL Certificates
-I went to the bottom and clicked on the "Click here to paste a CA cert"
-I checked the "use CA cert"
-I pasted in the cert and clicked save.
-it said success and should be secure in few minutes.

I went to the site and it tried to use the localhost cert which threw up an error message.

After... I went back into the SSL Certificates and I tried pasting the cert into the middle box and clicking save.

Same thing.

What am I doing wrong here?

It appears you didn't cut and paste the correct certificate(s) in the correct place(s).

The middle box must contain two items: the private key DirectAdmin put there when it created the CSR, and directly under that the Certificate sent by your Certificate provider, with no blank line(s) inbetween.

Then make sure you've got the radio style 'tick' in the right place and save. Your certificate provider may or may not require a CA (chain) certificate; if they do, then click on 'use CA cert' and install it there.

If you no longer have your private key you'll probably have to start the process over again, as it's required, and it's not saved anywhere but on your DirectAdmin system. Most Certificate providers will reissue a Certificate if you make a mistake during the installation (our Certificates come with reissue insurance for the life of the Certificate).
