Hi,

I'm on Almalinux 8.10 right now with latest DirectAdmin Legacy license.

Is it safe for me to upgrade to Almalinux 9?

Right now, the instance is running flawlessly, so I don't want to break anything.

If it's safe, what is the best way to upgrade?
I've read several posts here and found nothing close to my need.

Cheer.

Best way is always backup everything, and install Almalinux 9 freshly and Directadmin and then restore.

You can also upgrade to Almalinux 9 with Elevate.
Normally this is safe, but always be sure you have backups before you start and follow the guide properly, so do the dry run test first!

Hello,

Neither DirectAdmin developers nor DirectAdmin users will guarantee anything here. Though the process of the upgrade is designed to be as much safe as possible. There are always risks that something goes wrong. You are the only one to take all the risks, if you are going to do it on your own.

Almost an year passed since CentOS 7 is EOL, and I had to deal with various issues occurred during the OS upgrade. In the worst scenario we had to recover a server from a snapshot. In other cases solve issues detected at a pre-upgrade step: missing CPU flags, bad partitioning, issues with network devices, etc.

Thus if not to panic and to have backups with an access to the server's console in a browser or over IPMI/IPKVM, an upgrade can be safely completed.

Hi,
that means I have to buy another server, do migration (via backup and restore features in DirectAdmin) and *optionally delete the old server?

@zEitEr

Do you recommend to stay or upgrade?

Many thanks for your feedback @Richard G @zEitEr

It all depends on how critical an IP change, possible downtime are.

Upgrade if a move to another server is not possible or is too time consuming. Move to another server if an upgrade is not possible.

So you might try and run pre-upgrade tests and see whether or not an upgrade is possible. I had only 1 or 2 servers, which failed to upgrade, had to move.

Upgrading to AlmaLinux 9 provides enhanced security, improved performance, and updated system libraries. It's a stable, RHEL-compatible release ideal for enterprise-grade deployments.

We've just gone from 8.10 to 9 (Latest) no issues - but we did backup everything first (as everyones configs are always slightly different) If you're worried about downtime then maybe perform the upgrade out of hours? GL

That's all true, if:

1. hostnode offers CPU support for RHL 9
2. VPS has correct partitioning

These and other issues can be identified on the pre-upgrade step

How about Directadmin?
Will it give full support for Legacy License on Almalinux 9?

Confirmed, we have all our servers running on Alma 9 for some time. But there is the MariaDB limitation indeed. Same limit for MySQL. You can look it up.
If required you can upgrade your legacy license to modern license for half price as long as you have it in use (pay for it), no pause option. Then also higher MariaDB can be used. But there is no going back to legacy afterwards.
