Hello,

I want to add wildcard DNS to only one domain on my server.

I tried yesterday by using putty and after editting and restarting apache didn't work anymore. With some help of a the servercompany i got the server up again and he told me i can use directadmin to add wildcard DNS to a domain.

How must i do that ?

That's what i don't understand

To setup apache, go to:
Admin Level -> Custom Httpd configurations -> domain.com
In the top text area, add this *one* line:
ServerAlias *.|DOMAIN|

if the domein is www.adomein.com

must i add

ServerAlias *.|adomein|

or
ServerAlias *.|adomein|com

ServerAlias *.adomein.com
or

ServerAlias *.adomein

What must i do exactly ?

You don't need to edit anything on that line, just add it as is:
ServerAlias *.|DOMAIN|
DA will automatically replace |DOMAIN| with the right value.

Exactly what it says:

ServerAlias *.|DOMAIN|

Or you can add instead (for example):

ServerAlias *.adomein.com

I just added a domain to my server. Is there a reason why it wouldn't immediately display in the list when I click the CUSTOM HTTPD CONFIG link?

The site is there...it created the domain. The DNS record is there too. Heck I even restarted named, httpd, and da but no effect.

Please assist.

The last time I contributed to this thread was about ten months ago.

I have no idea why the domain shouldn't appear in the list. Many things DirectAdmin does, it does in realtime. Nothing else takes more than a minute to start.

Hi,

I am on a VPS (freebsd) and have DA in admin level.

I followed this guide to the point, using every screenshot as a reference.

then I restarted named and httpd (vid DA)

and it still doesn't work

aa.mydomain.com is an invalid web address.

I have a few domains, all opened by a user (which I created from the admin console)... then switched to the admin control panel (DA) and..

I added an A record to DNS Control (after selecting a domain from the list)

and ServerAlias *.|DOMAIN| to the custom httpd configurations

what am I doing wrong ?

please help

thanks,

Moshe

Sorry, here is my post with the data..

I am on a VPS (freebsd) and have DA in admin level.

I followed this guide to the point, using every screenshot as a reference.

I created a user via the admin panel.

I then switched to that user and opened several domains.

i then returned to the admin panel, and..

I added an A record to DNS Control (after selecting a domain from the list):
(the actual IP is a little different)

*.pokemy.info A 212.143.230.200

and added
ServerAlias *.|DOMAIN|

to the custom httpd configurations

but still aa.pokemy.info is an invalid web address.

what am I doing wrong ?

please help

thanks,

Moshe

Try pinging your wildcard subdomains from your own server to check whether they are resolving.

I thought of it, but when I got in via SSH I got an error:

ping: socket: Operation not permitted

Maybe that is becuase I am on a VPS..

so I tried nslookup and got this interesting thing, when I tried one.pokemy.info I got to the correct IP, but when I tried oneee.pokemy.info it actually appended a co.il at the end of it and resolved it to another IP...

For aa.pokemy.info I get

Code:
aa
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by
(output started at /home/moshebox/domains/pokemy.info/public_html/index.php:2)
in /home/moshebox/domains/pokemy.info/public_html/index.php on line 49

Looks like you have a php error. But the wildcard does work as far as apache and bind are concerned.

pokemyinfo.com is not even a registered domain. You have to register the domain first.

Assuming you meant aaaa.pokemy.info instead of aaaa.pokemyinfo.com

Your server at 212.143.230.210 is responding to aaaa.pokemy.info but the domain pokemy.info is not pointed to that nameserver. The nameservers ns3.loyalness.com and ns4.loyalness.com have not been set up to accept the wildcards for pokemy.info.

Actually

on godaddy, the NS servers are ok

but on my DA I just found

pokemy.info. NS ns3.loyalness.com.
pokemy.info. NS ns4.loyalness.com.

these were put for me automatically, maybe by the hosting company who gave me the VPS.

I don't understand why, but I'll try to alter them as well.

Ok, I added the name servers given to me by my hosting company and the same as in Godaddy records.

it's still doesn't work for any name via the browser.. (dig commands do work)

any suggestions ?

Ok, it seems that after a while it did begin working (although I did restarted httpd and named..)

the only remaining problem is that some subdomian get lookup veryfast and sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds...

any idea why is it taking so long sometimes ? the server is fast and has low load so it isn't the server.
