Changing PTR Records

I need to change my PTR record so that certain email systems do not reject messages from my domain. My server's IP is 65.99.206.78 which is also assigned to Reseller itribal.com and my main website is User powwowtime.com at 65.99.206.79 (the server came with a block of five IP's and three remain unused). I have a dedicated server so I pretty much have full run of the show.

SO I logged into DirectAdmin as Admin and went to DNS Administration, went to PTR and entered (reversing DNS as per the help website):

78.206.99.65.in-addr.arpa PTR itribal.com. <-with period@end

I also did this for powwowtime's DNS entry

79.206.99.65.in-addr.arp PTR powwowtime.com.

I looked at dnsstuff.com and they said my DNS server (ns1.itribal.com or ns2.itribal.com which I both set up at 65.99.206.78) reports that no PTR records exist.

You're probably all shaking your heads at this and going "Gawd what a NEWB!" but what can I say...

Any cool ideas y'all would like to share? :D

If your isp doesnt forward ptr requests to your dns servers then you will have no control over them.

Most of the time you don't get to control reverse DNS unless you've got an entire C-class or more.

So you need to have your upstream provider do the reverse DNS for you.

revers ip

have a class c and the isp has deligated ptr to me,, have a win 2000 and win 2003 servers for dns and of course my da server has dns,,, set reverse records up on the two win servers and the da box,, when doing a reverse lookup with dnnstuff one of the win srv will always give the correct ip to domain name, but when i refresh the screen enouth and it ask the da server for the ptr record it doesnt resolve and tells the requesting server to goto a root dns server and most often dnsstuf says its stuck in a loop. i can also disable the dns on the win servers and get tht same problem, for now iam ok as the win severs dns works but really would like to get the da reverse dns figured out,, may have something to do with the multiple host on the same ip...any help welocmed...

so tell me, whats the advantage of having the ability to add PTR records in DA if it doesnt actually work?.
I did this for a site with a dedicated IP , but like found here, it still repotrs no "PTR' records

It does work. But as pointed out previously:

If your isp doesnt forward ptr requests to your dns servers then you will have no control over them.

If yours is not working its not a DA flaw but the problem lies with your isp. They are not redirecting ptr queries to your name servers.

Most upstream providers won't give you rDNS authority unless you have at least an entire C-class. Doing rDNS yourself isn't always intuitive (not everyone has a nice control panel like DA :) ) and the upstream wants to make sure the rDNS is handled correctly.

One exception is AT&T aDSL with static IPs. At my home they gave me rDNS authority for my five usable IP#s.

But they're an exception, and no, we don't host any sites on those IP#s :) .
