ConfigServer shutting down as of 31st of August 2025

Hello flexJoly,

Can you please give advice about what to do, or even better: provide a script (in custombuild) to make it safe again or replace it with an other firewall. Or whatever.

Enable csf in directadmin

Bash:
da update
da build set csf yes
da build csf

directadmin will manage CSF since now. You should have an actual version of directadmin for it.

Hi Alex,

That sounds great!!!
What about the plugin? Should I remove it?

We have the legacy-version  because the provider (transip.nl) does not have the newest licenses yet. But we are on the latest 1.686 now.

Thanks!!!

I have CSF version 15.02 installed.
Would staying on this version pose any security risks?
Do you recommend any software to use instead of CSF?

It looks like it will be forked to a new open source product:
sentinelfirewall

Maybe that will be integrated with directadmin?
Think there will be tens if not hundreds of forks in the future. Saw them starting to appear as soon as WTTW released the source code to GitHub. Personally, i'll keep whatever ships with DirectAdmin at the moment, and for the foreseeable future as it will have been tested and trusted by the DA dev team. With the best will in the world, it only takes one line of poorly modified or misplaced code to wreak havoc with production servers.

You and me both. Only thing I can think of was that CSF was always free, and maybe the premium addons and other products they created weren't doing so well or got too expensive to maintain. Shame as loads of folk got let down after buying licences for software they can never reinstall now.

The legacy license is pretty much dead in the water now. So if you care about having a supported server you should probably nag the provider to update.

I think BitNinja is a worthy consideration. I use it with ISPmanager and probably will consider it for directadmin since apparently it is compatible.

You can forget about that. Datacenters are all about making money, they are not prepared to pay for licensing or it must be very very cheap or for free.
Those days are gone, also reason that Hetzner fully stopped selling cPanel and Plesk licenses since january this year.

Wonder what happened to make CSF shut down the business so suddenly?
Same reason DA decided to set the lifetime licenses to legacy at a certain point. Income/revenue does not cut the development costs anymore.
It was also stated that it was a revenue issue by Way to the Web somewhere on their blog.

They offer budget web hosting packages themselves now with WP/LAMP stacks and the like. I never got on with Plesk as a web management tool. cPanel and WHM wasn't too bad and I think it's a really useful suite of tools, but I think their pricing structure now is totally outrageous. I know companies have to make money to survive, but their hikes went absolutely crazy. I'm not surprised as a result, panels like Directadmin, Webuzo, Webmin/Virtualmin etc are more go to now for budget hosts. DA is 100% my go to panel. I've tried most of them but feel most at home here.

Yes I know, my point is only that they do not support professional panels anymore as support for my argument that there is datacenters won't pay for modern DA licenses.

You can't compare Directadmin with free panels.
As for Webuzo, that's a professional panel but is only slightly cheaper than DA, no experience with it myself, but that is another discussion.
Everything bit off-topic here because this thread is about the stopping of CSF. ;)

Apologies for the waffle @Richard G . Back to CSF... 😁
