smtalk,

John (DirectAdmin Support) and Thom (tlchost) both made the same points; I didn't see you tell John to open his own thread ;) .
A thread in the 3rd Party Software forum or the Advertising forum should certainly stay ontopic and probably shouldn't be hijacked, but after all you started this thread as a General Discussion thread. So a general discussion seems to be fair game.

Thom, note that I've already pointed out what has to be done to convert UebiMiau mailboxes to IMAP so they'll work with IMAP solutions. Why don't you write the script ;) ?

If I could I would...but then there might be folks who take me to task for supporting an EOL/Vulnerable product.

I would think those that want to see UebiMiau removed would have already written the script so that folks who still use it wouldn't object to the elimination.

Maybe if enough folks post that they don't want such a script and would never use it, it will show up.:D

That's smtalk, rldev and as many as 16 others. How about it, gents :) ?

Jeff

I think I am missing something here. It seems to me that UebiMiau being eliminated in DA would only affect new installations in which user would not have used it yet and so therefore nothing needs to be transferred or converted.

DA would not eliminate it in current installations. That would be up to the admin of that server.

In new installations DA could leave the alias of /webmail to UebiMiau and install RoundCube with an alias of /roundcube. That way any updates to current installations would not interfere with the current use of UebiMiau.

The only problem is that there would not be a link to UebiMiau in the control panel but it is not necessary anyway and you probably would not want it there. That way current users of DA will not be tempted to start using UebiMiau. UebiMiau would still be accessed with /webmail.

So to sum up: An option for DA is to stop supplying UebiMiau in there new installations. Put RoundCube in its place but have a different alias for it such as /roundcube. Updates to older DA installations would just replace the UebiMiau link with RoundCube but UebiMiau would still work using /webmail.

I know I have a hard time expressing myself sometimes so hopefully somebody understands what I am saying and can explain it better.

But if DA were to change the control panel such that the server admin/owner
could select which of the webmail programs would be accessed via /webmail and which one s were not accessable, then folks could configure their servers as they felt was best for their customers

You've done a good job of explaining your position, Floyd, and you make some excellent points.

Actually I'd thought of that, and I apologize for not making my thought processes clear.

I agree almost wholeheartedly with you. But there's a reason for the "almost":

It makes it hard for those of us with multiple servers to move clients between servers.

So my suggestion (I'll pass it along to John) would be to leave UebiMiau in new installs, but not document it in DA. And make ~/webmail a link to ~/squirrelmail. And install RoundCube as well as Squirrelmail.

Why squirrelmail? Because so many people have already made it a link to squirrelmail to avoid just the problems we've all been writing about (in fact we do that on new dedicated server installs unless requested otherwise).

I don't see a need for a checkbox to select one or the other as default (since it only has to be changed once), but I don't object either ;) .

And a few changes to the skin: webmail only under webmail, and it goes to whatever the link is for. Since both roundcube and squirrelmail are standard IMAP clients, that should work.

That way people who know about it because they already use it, can get to UebiMiau (they'll have to be told about using ~/oldwebmail [for example]) and everyone else will see the new client.

Can anyone supply me with a RoundCube account to bang around on for a day or two? I'll only send email to and from myself; I promise :) .

Thanks.

Jeff

Something like

Application Access via /webmail Make available
UebiMiau no no
Squirrelmail yes yes
RoundCube no yes

any of those marked yes under makeavailable could be accessed at
/name_of_application

If you went that far, the slection could be expanded to allow the server owner/administrator to add another webmail application of his/her choice.

Thom

Thom,

Did you read my post? I made it while you were making yours.

Jeff

Just now did.....

You point about UebiMiau not being so easy to find via the control panel makes sense....and of course, I prefer my choice based setup for the
/webmail url.

The problem with NOT having an easy way to specify what lives at /webmail is if Squirrelmail, or Roundcube or Thommail becomes EOL and/or vulnerable, we get to walk own this very road again.

Thom

Personally I don't think /webmail should be used at all. I think /name_of_application should be used. That way users make a conscious choice of which program they want to use.

He can if he want :) You can also do that. I don't realize why you've written this sentence? :)

I said that few months ago, that in /webmail we should only see what webmails are available in the server :)

Not once we've switched to webmail clients that run as IMAP clients; then we can change between them at will and at the most have to do a bit of customization of preferences, but we don't lose any email.

Jeff

jlasman, it's general :) The problem is that because I got some displeasures and I couldn't change the poll options, that's why I recommended to open another thread.

jlasman, some of people wants to see "Leave both UebiMiau and Roundcube." instead of "Leave both UebiMiau (not secure and EOL) and Roundcube." and "Just leave UebiMiau." instead of "Just leave UebiMiau, I don't need anything else.". I think will okay now?

I disagree....I'm in charge of my server....my users are not.

Thom

I don't understand what you are disagreeing with? I never said anything about who was in charge of your server.
